Like
most people, I had little understanding of adoption in 1999 when my
teenage daughter, Ryan, became pregnant and began considering
adoption for her unborn child. Though I knew some people who had
adopted children and a friend who was adopted, it was not really
relevant to me. I began to educate myself and realized adoption is a
complicated matter and can be difficult to accept.
My daughter did choose adoption and I began to see her as a good mother for choosing two very capable, loving parents for her son, Grant, and giving him the stability she was unable to provide as a young, single woman.
One
year after the birth of my grandson, I started a ministry at the
Women's Pregnancy Center called Where Grace Abounds. This is a
support group open to anyone who wants to explore the possibility of
adoption. Since the group began, I have seen dozens of women who
have considered the same choice as my daughter. Some have decided it
was not for them while others felt, in their situation, it was the
best choice for them and their baby. Whatever these women ultimately
chose to do, it has been a privilege to work with each of them as
they walked through the process of considering adoption.
